Got a friend with a 97 Civic EX with a SOHC VTEC motor.
What would you do to this motor to speed it up. Blower? Turbo? Or maybe swap it out.
It's a daily driver, not a drag race car. Maybe a motor swap first? How is this for a platform.
He's already got headers, and exhaust, and intake etc.

I think I'd try to find one of those CRV motors with some Crower cams. I've read on the Hybrid site that there's a guy who swapped out his VTEC motor for one and was impressed with the torque. He just missed the revability of the VTEC. The Crower cams should give you a little more top end, and it should be cheaper then a GSR motor, and have enough torque to keep any daily driver happy! I think with those cams he should be able to get a legit 145-155 to the wheels.

If he wants to go all out do a motor swap. If he wants to keep his engine and go FI he should find a way to lower the compression a bit. The D16Y8 is VERY detonation prone...at least with the SC anyway. I haven't heard anything about how our engines react to turbo's. Some guys who SC their D16Y8's swap to a D16A6 head. The A6 head seems to be the most favorable one for making power on the SOHC motors. More information can be obtained at http://www.theoldone.com Feel free to ask me any specific questions you might have.

A blower on a 97 Ex? Been there, done that. Swaps are cool but they are really expensive and they can be difficult to smog depending on where you live. I vote for turbo. Waveoff makes a good point about detonation. Although I have a feeling the problems associated is due to the supercharger/heat rise/JR fuel management. Compression is 9.6:1. That's a nice compromise for Fi.

Check out my sig. I have been running this setup for approx. 1 year and have had *minor*
problems only. Usually associated with me trying some jackass new way to make more power. The big thing with the SOHC VTEC is
proper fuel/timing management. I run 6psi on the street [w/ 93 octane gas] and 10psi at the strip [w/ 100 octane gas]. If I try to run 6psi on 87 or 10psi on 93, I get massive detonation [very audible] but otherwise it is fine. BTW, I run Ice Water through my IC at the track to get my charge temps below ambient. Peace.

BLOWER!!!???!! NO WAY IN HELL! Do not run a D16 in a FI configuration. Total waste of money and time.
B18C1 & C5, B16A2/3, B18B and B20's are super easy weekend swaps.
If you don't want to spend lots of $, then a B18B is the way to go. $2000 for everything, can't beat it! Hell, a junk JRSC D16 setup will cost you over $2000, and you'll have more hp and torque, reliably with the B18B. Then some electronics and cams, you'll never be happier.
If you really want a JRSC, I'll sell mine for an offer.
Good luck with whatever you decide. Tom

Big Kat, those numbers are for hatches, not Coupes like the EX.
With the B18B he won't hit low 15's.
With B18C1 he will hit high 14's, low 15's
With B16 he will be looking at mid 15's.
I say build the stock motor and get a greddy turbo kit, and boost around 12psi. Pricewise you cant beat that in my opinion. 2000 for a built motor, and 1800 or so for the turbo,
You also have to take into consideration the install fees. A turbo is something that one can do on their own, only guys who have good experience can install a motor!
I think for the price or just over for a swap you can have a fully built stock motor running a decent amount of boost. The stock sohc motor doesnt have the potential of the bigger motors, but still, is cheaper.
Simply put, you would be faster than a B18C1 hybrid, with I/H/E, and done it cheaper!
